Lifespan of a pneumatic conveyor in a smelter and when replacement is worthwhile

The foundry environment is one of the most demanding conditions in which a pneumatic conveyor can operate. High temperatures, corrosive materials and continuous operating pressure wear the equipment in a way that is not always visible on the surface until problems have already arisen.

Signs that renewal is due

Maintenance of the pressure conveyor in the smelter does not always reveal the whole picture. The equipment may function technically, yet consume significantly more energy or require constant adjustment compared to before.

The following signs indicate that it is time to renew the pressure conveyor:

  • Pressure losses are steadily increasing without a clear reason
  • Wear parts, such as valves and seals, require replacement more frequently than before
  • Pipe wear accelerates particularly at bends and joints
  • Material loss increases or the quality of the transported material deteriorates during transfer
  • The equipment no longer meets current safety or environmental requirements
  • Spare parts are difficult to obtain or their delivery times have lengthened
  • Operations staff are reporting recurring faults that are slowing down production

A single sign does not necessarily mean that replacement is the only option. However, when several of these occur simultaneously, total cost calculation often begins to argue in favour of replacement.

In smelter operations, the service life of a pneumatic conveyor is shortened, particularly when the material being conveyed is difficult to handle: hot, moist or chemically reactive. The dense-phase conveying method reduces the speed of the material within the pipework and thus slows down wear and tear, but even this requires equipment that is correctly dimensioned and constructed from the right materials to remain operational under demanding conditions.
