With our cooling and drying solutions, you can handle even the hottest and most abrasive materials safely and efficiently, whether it is a matter of lowering the temperature or removing moisture.
The handling of hot and humid bulk materials determines how smoothly the process proceeds to the next stage. Kopar designs and supplies solutions for both material cooling and drying, as part of the same delivery if required.
Hot materials may require cooling for several reasons: subsequent process stages cannot tolerate high temperatures, HSE requirements prefer handling material at lower temperatures, legal restrictions for road transportation etc.
Materials that require cooling are typically solid products from high-temperature processing. Typical processes are energy boilers, roasting furnaces and lime kilns. Consequently, materials to be cooled comprise bottom ash, fly ash, process dust, sinter, calcine, burnt lime, fertilizers and activated carbon.
In many processes, the moisture of the material must be removed before further processing. Low moisture is a prerequisite for, for example, pneumatic transport and an even feed into the melting process. Drying also improves the storability and handleability of the material and enables moist side streams to be returned to the process.
Materials to be dried are typically metal concentrates, minerals and beneficiation products, bed material and sand for energy plants, and various moist side and waste streams. Some of these materials are highly flammable, which emphasises the importance of drying safety.
In Kopar’s drying drums, the material and hot gases flow in the same direction, and the heat is generated in a separate combustion chamber, so the material does not come into contact with an open flame.

Cooling of the copper alloy
A cooling drum for copper calcine was delivered to KGHM's Głogów smelter in Poland in 2016. The cooling drum is fed with 20 t/h of copper calcine at a temperature of approximately 450°C. The drum cools the material down to approximately 130°C.
Bottom ash cooling
KRC coolers, specifically designed for cooling large bottom ash volumes, have been operating at this Polish power plant since 2018.
Material recycling and operational safety for Vatajankoski district heating production
When the Kankaanpää district heating plant in Vatajankoski switched from peat to wood-based fuel, a need to develop the processing of bedding material emerged. The recycling solution supplied by Kopar helped to reduce material waste, improve occupational safety and support the plant's sustainable energy production goals.
