When to choose pressure transport and when to choose vacuum transport?

Pressure transport and vacuum transport are the two main methods of pneumatic transport for the transfer of bulk materials. In pressure conveying, the material is pushed through the pipeline by means of higher pressure, while in vacuum conveying the material is sucked to the destination point by means of negative pressure. The choice between the two depends on the characteristics of the material, the transfer distances and the requirements of the process.

What is the difference between pressure transport and vacuum transport?

Pressure transport works by pushing material in a pipeline at a higher pressure from the starting point to the target. In the system, a compressor produces compressed air that carries the material in a closed pipeline. The pressure is higher than the ambient air pressure.

Transport of litter is based on suction, where a suction device at the target point creates a vacuum in the pipework. This pressure differential causes the material to flow from the point of origin towards the suction device. The system usually uses rotor blowers or other suction devices.

The technical difference is reflected in the energy consumption and the design of the system. Pressure transport requires a more powerful compressor, but can transport material over longer distances. Sub-pressure transport is more energy efficient over short distances and is particularly suitable for situations where you want to avoid material falling out of the pipeline through possible leaks.

When is pressure transport the best option for material transfer?

Pressure transport is best suited to for long migratory journeys and for situations where high transport capacity is needed. It is an efficient solution for moving material to several different destinations from the same point of origin.

For heavier and denser materials, pressure transport provides sufficient force to transport them over long distances. The system also works well when the transfer route has a lot of elevation differences or complex pipe routes.

Pressure transport is also the preferred choice for industrial transport systems where the material has to pass through several process steps. Dense phase pressure conveying is particularly suitable for sensitive materials whose structure needs to be preserved during transport.

Why choose vacuum transport in certain situations?

Substitute transport is safer and a cleaner solution for many applications. In the event of a leak in the pipeline, the material is prevented from spreading to the environment because the system is under vacuum.

Energy efficiency is a major advantage of vacuum transport for short distances. The system consumes less energy than pressure transport under similar conditions. This makes it a sustainable choice from an environmental point of view.

Substrate transport is ideal for situations where material is collected from several points to a single destination. Dedusting and collection of material from warehouses or production lines is efficiently achieved with a vacuum system. In addition, the system is often simpler to install and maintain than a pressure transport system.

Choosing the right transport method requires careful process analysis. Material characteristics, transfer distances, capacity needs and safety requirements determine which solution best serves the needs of each industrial process. In both cases, pneumatic conveying offers a reliable solution for handling bulk material.
